drug-costMILWAUKEE - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled a bold new proposal Thursday to curb prescription medicine prices through negotiations, new penalties for non-compliant drug companies and international price indexing.

Citizen Action of Wisconsin Executive Director Robert Kraig made the following statement in response to the Lower Drug Costs Now Act (H.R. 3) announcement:

robert_kraig“We’ve heard a lot of promises from politicians about lowering drug prices, but so far there’s been limited meaningful action at the Federal level. Speaker Pelosi’s H.R. 3 is a major step in the right direction. It would require prescription drug corporations to actually negotiate drug prices with government or pay a penalty. The proposal also levels the playing field between the cost of medicines in the United States and other comparable nations, where people pay much less for the same drugs. While it doesn’t solve every problem, this bill is great news for millions of people in our state and around the country who struggle to afford medicine because the drug corporations have kept prices high and put medicine out of reach for patients. Every lawmaker in Congress should stand up in support of this critical first step to comprehensive prescription drug reform.”
