Evers Orders Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of Fallen Union Grove-Yorkville Firefighter PDF Print E-mail

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for Union Grove-Yorkville firefighter Brian Serdynski. Serdynski passed away on Sat., Nov. 2, 2019, as the result of a heart attack he had suffered a few weeks earlier while on an emergency call.

tony_evers“Brian was a loving father, loyal friend, and a pillar of his community, and put his life on the line to protect and serve others,” said Gov. Evers. “I join Wisconsinites in mourning his death and remembering his legacy of selfless service. My deepest condolences are with Brian's family, including his wife Rachael and three kids, and his Union Grove-Yorkville Fire Department family.”

The order is effective immediately for today, Mon., Nov. 4, 2019, until sunset on Sun., Nov. 10, 2019.

9-11-memorialGov. Evers Signs Senate Bill 433 at the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Education Center in Kewaskum.


KEWASKUM — Gov. Tony Evers today signed Senate Bill 433, now 2019 Wisconsin Act 20, into law. This bill designates a portion of State Trunk Highway 28 as the “Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway” and directs the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to erect and maintain signage for the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway and the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Education Center in the village of Kewaskum.

tony-evers“These memorials will serve as an important reminder to the people of Wisconsin of the lives lost, the heroes who ran towards danger without second thought, and our nation's grit and resilience in a time of tragedy,” said Gov. Evers. “It was the tireless work of the people of Kewaskum that made this memorial possible, and it is an honor to be with them today to sign this bill into law.”

The Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Education Center is a community project in the village of Kewaskum lead by a group known as Kewaskum Remembers 9/11, including Gordon and Kathy Haberman who lost their daughter Andrea in the 9/11 attacks. The memorial was built to honor the heroes who responded in the nation's time of need and to pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost.

Senate Bill 433, now 2019 Wisconsin Act 20:

  • Designates a portion of STH 28, starting at the I-41 and STH 28 interchange in Dodge County to the STH 144 intersection in Washington County as the "Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway";
  • Requires the Department of Transportation to erect and maintain signage for the highway and the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorails and Education Center in the village of Kewaskum; and
  • Requires the Department of Transportation to identify the location of the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway and the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Education Center on state highway service maps and folded highway maps.

Winnebago CountyMADISON — Gov. Tony Evers announced Thursday his appointment of Cheryl Brehmer as the new Winnebago County Coroner. This appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Barry Busby.

tony-evers“Ms. Brehmer will be an excellent Coroner and will serve the citizens of Winnebago County with a high degree of professionalism,” said Gov. Evers. “Through her prior service to the county as both a Deputy Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner, Ms. Brehmer possesses both the medical knowledge and the compassion necessary to lead the coroner's office.”

Brehmer, a Winnebago County native, has worked in the Winnebago County Coroner's Office since 2012. She has investigated over 1,000 on-scene deaths and has an average of 84 on-call hours per week. She serves on Winnebago County's Child Death Review Team, the Overdose Fatality Review Team, and assists in training the Victim Crisis Response Team.
