MADISON – On Wednesday, the Assembly Democratic Members of the Joint Committee on Finance and Forward Wisconsin hosts announced a statewide tour to engage with the public in support of Governor Tony Evers’ proposed 2021-23 Wisconsin State Budget. State Representatives Evan Goyke (D-Milwaukee) and Greta Neubauer (D-Racine), along with their Democratic Assembly colleagues and various local stakeholders, will mobilize in every region of the state to highlight the impact of the Badger Bounceback Budget. Following the launch of this new public engagement initiative, Rep. Goyke and Rep. Neubauer offered the following remarks:

greta-neubauer“The Badger Bounceback budget is a budget for all of Wisconsin. Initiatives and investments will reach every corner of the state and as members of the Joint Committee on Finance, so should we. That is why we will be touring the state, border-to-border to meet with local stakeholders and hear about how we can win a budget that works for them.”

The Border-to-Border Budget Tour will begin on Friday, April 30th, with further details and itineraries for each stop to be released in advance.

Madison, WI – On Tuesday, Superintendent-elect Jill Underly announced that Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-77) will be a part of her transition team. On this appointment Rep.Stubbs released the following statement:

MADISON - Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) announced the appointment of attorney Awais Khaleel on Monday to the Wisconsin Ethics Commission.

Hintz. “Awais brings with him years of experience working to engage Wisconsinites in civic life and government, and I am confident the people of Wisconsin will be served well by his dedication to the public good, his insight and perspective, and his commitment to strengthening our democracy.”

Khaleel is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Madison and Howard University School of Law and currently serves as an Assistant District Attorney in Dane County, a role in which he prosecutes a range of offenses including hate crimes and crimes against children. He is a founding member of the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance, and has served on the City of Madison Affirmative Action Commission, on the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Council on Offender Reentry, and as a board member for the Wisconsin Association of State Prosecutors.

Khaleel’s appointment will be effective May 1, 2021. He will be the first Muslim and first BIPOC member to serve on the Commission.

Gov. Evers Acts on Five Bills PDF Print E-mail

evers-signsMADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today signed three bipartisan bills, vetoes two others.

Senate Bill 50, now Wisconsin Act 26:

  • Requires the Department of Workforce Development to promulgate rules to allow an employer to require tipped employees to electronically sign, or otherwise acknowledge electronically, the counting of tips to fulfil the employer's requirement to pay the minimum wage.

Senate Bill 64, now Wisconsin Act 27:

  • Expands the purposes for which proceeds from the sale of state-owned properties controlled by the Department of Natural Resources may be spent;
  • Allows the use of proceeds from land sales to acquire or develop land or easements;
  • Prohibits the use of proceeds to pay for program administration costs, but allows the proceeds to be used to fund costs payable to the Department of Administration;
  • Clarifies that if the land was originally purchased with federal funds, the department must comply with federal limitations; and
  • Requires the department to submit a biennial report to the Joint Committee on Finance and the relevant standing committees regarding parcels sold and how the proceeds were used.

Senate Bill 85, now Wisconsin Act 28:

  • Adds text messages, electronic messages, e-mails or other electronic communications, or causing the device to ring or generate notifications repeatedly or continuously to the definition of stalking; and
  • Modifies the definition of "course of conduct" for stalking to include sending physical or electronic material to a member of the victims family or household, employers, coworkers, or friends.

Additionally, the governor vetoed Assembly Bill 23 and Assembly Bill 24.
