N.E. Wisconsin GOP candidate for Congress Mike Gallagher picks strange bedfellows with Trump advisor who Supports Banning Muslims from Entering the U.S.
MADISON - Eighth district congressional candidate Mike Gallagher is holding a fundraiser today headlined by Donald Trump advisor Michael Flynn, who stirred controversy by publicly supporting Trump’s ban on Muslims entering the United States and other questionable policy positions held by the Republican Presidential nominee. The fundraiser, located in Milwaukee, features a “Homeland Security & Anti-Terrorism Round Table discussion with the General [Flynn]” for $5,400 or they can attend a “photo opp” for $2,700. Both Gallagher and his leading competitor for the Republican congressional nomination, State Senator Frank Lasee, publicly supported Trump's candidacy in separate interviews on WFRV TV [4/26/2016 and 3/13/2016]. “Given that Gallagher has endorsed Trump and is using one of his top advisors to raise campaign cash, does he also endorse Trump and Flynn's support for discriminating on the basis of religion who can visit the United States,” said Brandon Weathersby. “Or does Gallagher support Trump’s plan to slash taxes for big corporations? Both Mike Gallagher and Frank Lasee need to explain why they are supporting someone like Trump whose values are so different from those of most people in Wisconsin.” The 8th congressional district includes Brown, Calumet, Door, Kewaunee, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto, Outagamie, Shawano, Waupaca, and parts of Winnebago counties. The race is one of the most competitive in the country, and top national race watchers Charlie Cook and Stuart Rothenberg rate the race as “toss-up.” Background: Trump-Advising General Defends Muslim Ban “Former Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, an informal advisor to Donald Trump, has some creative ways of embracing the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s most controversial plans. Former Defense Intelligence Agency director Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn expressed his support for Donald Trump’s extreme national security positions in an interview released Thursday — including a ban on Muslim entry.” [The Huffington Post, 5/19/2016]
