brad-schimel-hispan-milwMADISON, Wis. — Today, the Washington Post revealed that extreme politician Brad Schimel is saying one thing in public, but changing his tune behind closed doors, having pushed Donald Trump’s Big Lie and baseless conspiracy theories about the results of the 2020 election—which Trump lost fair and square.

Last week, Schimel refused to comment on Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Wisconsin because he “didn’t read the briefs.” But at a GOP event in Jefferson County on February 11, Schimel wasn’t quite so close-lipped. Of Trump and the 2020 election in Wisconsin, Schimel said One thing he doesn't do is forget people that screw him over, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court screwed him over.”

In fact, a majority of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, including justices Brian Hagedorn, Ann Walsh Bradley, Rebecca Dallet and Jill Karofsky, rejected the Trump campaign efforts to throw out legal votes and overturn Wisconsin’s 2020 election results, including a lawsuit that sought to have more than 221,000 ballots disqualified in Dane and Milwaukee counties.

“Brad Schimel has been caught in a lie and now he’s talking out of both sides of his mouth because he wants to hide the fact that he believes legal votes should have been tossed and the free and fair election in Wisconsin should have been overturned,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Deputy Communications Director Haley McCoy. “The people of Wisconsin want common sense, not conspiracy theories on our highest court, and they will reject Brad Schimel, his extreme politics, and his disrespect for the will of the people on April 1.”

Washington Post: Wisconsin Supreme Court race puts Trump and Musk at center stage
By: Patrick Marley

  • When Trump lost the 2020 election in Wisconsin, he challenged the results before the state Supreme Court, which at the time was controlled by conservatives. A conservative justice formed a majority with the court’s liberals to reject Trump’s arguments. Schimel last week declined to say whether the court reached the right decision — leaving open the possibility he would have voted to throw out hundreds of thousands of ballots to give Trump a victory.
  • Asked if he believed the court ruled correctly, Schimel paused for several seconds and said, “You know what? To be honest, I didn’t spend any time reviewing that. I’ve got a day job. I didn’t go through that. I don’t know the answer to what — I don’t know.”
  • Crawford said the court was right to reject Trump’s challenge and expressed surprise that Schimel didn’t know the details of a case that sought to invalidate absentee ballots in Democratic areas but not in conservative ones.
  • “I think it’s astonishing that Brad Schimel would not be familiar with probably the most consequential decision the Wisconsin Supreme Court has made in decades,” Crawford said.
  • In a meeting with supporters last month, Schimel said the court had treated Trump unfairly. “I think the odds of an endorsement are probably pretty high because, you know, one thing he doesn’t do is forget people that screw him over, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court screwed him over,” Schimel told backers in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, according to a recording obtained by The Washington Post.
