WAUSAU, WI - This week, local leaders including Yee Leng Xiong, Dr. Kay Gruling, and Dr. Brian Ewert, gathered in Wausau to highlight Vice President Harris and Governor Walz’s efforts to lower health care costs, protect essential programs like Medicare and Medicaid, and ensure every Wisconsinite in Wausau and beyond can access the affordable care they need.
Dr. Brian Ewert speaking at the press conference in Wausau At the same time, speakers warned their neighbors about the threat that Donald Trump and JD Vance pose to rural Wisconsinites’ access to health care. They spoke about how Trump’s Project 2025 agenda would make severe cuts to programs like Medicare and Medicaid, and roll back the Affordable Care Act. Trump’s agenda would disproportionately hurt rural hospitals and communities, like Aspirus Wausau Hospital. “The contrast could not be clearer in this election. Vice President Harris will take care of you and your neighbors by protecting your health care coverage and lowering your costs, while Trump will do the opposite,” said State Assembly Candidate Yee Leng Xiong. “Vice President Harris is fighting for a future where every person – in blue states and red states, in urban areas and rural areas – has the opportunity to not just get by, but to get ahead.” “Vice President Harris has worked tirelessly to lower healthcare costs for Americans. She has helped boost funding for rural hospitals and training more nurses and physicians in rural areas and has protected Medicaid. Vice President Harris also cast the tie-breaking vote on the Inflation Reduction Act, legislation which capped the monthly cost of insulin at $35 per month for seniors,” said Dr. Kay Gruling. “As a physician who has cared for many seniors, I have seen how stressful it is for seniors to balance the excessively high cost of medications with their many other expenses.” “The insulin cap will have a tremendous impact on my patients because now that more people will be able to afford to treat their diabetes, their conditions will not develop into kidney failure,” said Dr. Brian Ewert. “Not only has Vice President Harris’ efforts saved my patients money, but it will also save their lives.” |
