MADISON, Wis. — As Republicans politicians in Congress continue lurching toward a government shutdown, more than 90,000 Wisconsinites who rely on vital nutrition assistance from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) could soon start being turned away at grocery store counters — including 18,466 women, 53,500 children, and 19,104 infants.

“Congressional Republicans’ extreme political games are pushing the country closer and closer to a government shutdown that could have devastating impacts on Wisconsin families,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Joe Oslund. “If GOP members like Derrick Van Orden and Bryan Steil continue putting their extreme political agenda over Wisconsinites, more than 90,000 women, children, and infants in our state who depend on WIC for nutrition assistance could be turned away at the grocery store. It’s clear that Republicans are more concerned about doing Trump’s bidding than looking out for the American people, and it’s families who will be forced to pay the price.”
