womens-health-monthMADISON, Wis. — Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement commemorating the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

“On Sunday, we mark the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, recognizing a constitutional right to access abortion—guaranteed by a constitutional right to privacy—in the United States. Today, the protections of Roe have been overturned, leaving Wisconsinites and millions of Americans to face a chilling reality in which patients must travel hundreds of miles to access clinics in neighboring states and doctors risk jail for providing reproductive health care. Moreover, the overturning of the right to privacy has raised the specter of further decisions eroding additional freedoms that Americans have counted on for decades.

“Republican politicians sought for decades to overturn Roe and insert the government into one of the most personal and private decisions a person can make. Last fall, Wisconsinites responded to the GOP’s attack on our privacy and freedoms by reelecting Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul.

“Here in Wisconsin, Democrats are now committed to the project of electing a new justice to our state Supreme Court this Spring and depriving Jennifer Dorow or Dan Kelly the chance to demand enforcement our state’s draconian 1849 criminal abortion ban. The Supreme Court race is a critical next step in restoring and expanding the freedoms once protected by Roe. In years to come, Wisconsinites will have the chance to reelect Senator Baldwin, flip Wisconsin House seats in order to restore the Democratic House majority, and pass Senator Baldwin’s Women’s Health Protection Act into law.”
