tim-michels-gov-mjsHis dangerous Republican-backed gun legislation that will put Wisconsin kids and families at risk

MADISON, Wis. — With school back in session, Tim Michels has yet to answer how he will keep students safe from gun violence. Beyond planning to hold an annual conference on “school safety” he has yet to establish a clear plan that will prevent shootings at Wisconsin schools.

The candidate for governor has already made it clear that he will prioritize the radical gun lobby and partisan politics over the safety of Wisconsinites. He was so desperate for the NRA’s support that he lied about having their endorsement and admitted that he looked forward to working with the legislature and “getting those bills right” that Gov. Evers has vetoed. This includes a bill that would allow loaded firearms on school grounds and loosens restrictions on firearms.

Michels wants 18-year-olds to be able to buy AR-15s with no waiting period. He opposed a bipartisan package of reforms that made it harder for deadly weapons to fall into the hands of domestic abusers and included background checks for gun buyers under 21.

When discussing red flag laws at a debate, which are often used as a response tool for victims of domestic violence, Michels said that abusers shouldn’t have their weapons confiscated because an “angry ex, ex spouse makes a complaint. Oh, he made a threat to me and then the police have to go confiscate his guns.” He has pledged to lift restrictions on firearms, opposes an assault weapons ban, and said red flag laws, which are supported by 81% of Wisconsin voters, “won’t happen here” when he’s governor.

Michels has made it clear that no matter how unpopular his agenda would be with Wisconsinites, he does not care. His radical agenda will make people less safe, including students, teachers, and administrators.

“Tim Michels is against even the most common sense gun safety measures and embraces radical policies that would make our communities less safe,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “If he is elected, we will see dangerous Republican-backed gun legislation that will put Wisconsin kids and families at risk.”
