MADISON, Wis. – After months of division among the Republican candidates for governor and the non-stop self-serving behavior of Senator Ron Johnson, this weekend’s Republican Party of Wisconsin state convention will only continue to highlight the extremism of Wisconsin Republican politicians and the importance of electing Democrats at every level in 2022.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:

“The Republican Party of Wisconsin’s dumpster fire of a convention is going to showcase how extreme and self-serving every single GOP candidate on the ballot is. Wisconsinites want a common-sense leader, but they won’t find one at the Republican convention.

“For months, the Wisconsin Republicans running for governor have embraced every radical and divisive position they can find. Along the way, the Republican field has not only divided our state, they’ve also created chaos within their own party. The GOP’s gruesome foursome—Rebecca Kleefisch, Tim Michels, Kevin Nicholson, and Tim Ramthun—will push each other further to the extremes of every issue. Whether it is disenfranchising voters through lies regarding the 2020 election or advocating for a total ban on abortion, these candidates have said it all in order to pander to the fringe base and Donald Trump.

“Meanwhile, in Washington, Ron Johnson has completely abandoned his home state as he’s focused entirely on his self-serving agenda. Whether it’s working overtime to take away reproductive rights and protections for people with pre-existing conditions, all while raising health care costs, or changing the tax code in a way that benefitted himself and his biggest donors, Ron Johnson has worked against Wisconsinites’ best interests at every turn.

“We are proud to be able to unite around Governor Evers, Attorney General Kaul, and our future Senate nominee, who will stand up for Wisconsinites alongside Senator Tammy Baldwin. They are the last lines of defense against Republicans who want to take away Wisconsinites’ freedom to vote, access to abortion, and economic security.

“Sadly, the Republican convention makes clear that the WisGOP has followed its national counterpart down the path of fully embracing chaos, corruption, and extremism.”
