MADISON, WI- Yesterday, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed Assembly Bill 108, which creates a standard use of force definition and mandates reporting and intervention if an officer violates this standard. On this legislative action, Representative Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

shelia-stubbs“This policy is a shining example of Taskforce’s work, and what we can do when we come together. Creating a state wide use of force standard eliminates discrepancies, and holds our officers to a common standard. Tying this standard to a duty to report/intervene further ensures that officers that fail to uphold the high standard of their profession can be held accountable.”

“Accountability is necessary if we want to repair the relationship between law enforcment and the communities they serve. This bi-partisan legislation shows that we can continue to work together, and improve our criminal justice system. For too long our communities have been underserved, and undervalued, and this is a step towards a better more equitable Wisconsin.”

“I thank of the Taskforce members that devoted extra time to craft this use of force standard, and to all of my colleagues that helped make this recommendation a reality. In addition, I must thank my fellow Co-Chair on this Taskforce Majority Leader Representative Steineke (R-Kaukauna) for working with me to find bipartisan solutions to issues that.”

“This is a great day for the profession of law enforcment, our communities, and for the entire state of Wisconsin. Passing this bill is just the beginning for the reforms yet to come. This is a step in the right direction, but it is only the first step. As the late Congressman John Lewis once said ‘We’ve come too far; we’ve made too much progress to stop or to pull back. We must go forward’.
