korean-american-day-2021MADISON — Today is Korean American Day! Representative Hong (D-76), recently elected as the first AAPI legislator in Wisconsin, released the following statement:

francesca-yunjung-hong“Good afternoon everyone. My name is Francesca, Yunjung Hong. My pronouns are she/her and I currently live in Madison on occupied Ho-Chunk land.

I wanted to take some time to wish all my fellow Korean American friends and family a Happy Korean American day!

I am the proud daughter of Korean immigrants. My parents came here to pursue education and opportunity back in the 80s and I am so grateful that we are able to call Wisconsin home. Throughout my childhood, I was fortunate for the love and care my parents instilled in me to honor my Korean roots. My first language was Korean, Korean food is my favorite, and I'm so grateful we were able to practice Korean traditions and celebrate holidays like sebeh, selnal and chusek right here in Madison growing up.

To all in our community today celebrating the representation, leadership and contributions of Korean Americans across the nation, I thank you and I am honored to celebrate with you.

감사합니다.”
