STEVENS POINT, WI – Kathleen Vinehout, who represented Western Wisconsin’s 31st State Senate District from 2007 to 2019, has endorsed State Rep. Katrina Shankland against incumbent Derrick Van Orden for the state’s 3rd Congressional District.

During her term, Vinehout represented 8 of 19 counties in the 3rd Congressional District: Pierce, Pepin, Trempealeau, Buffalo, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, and Monroe. She joins a growing list of state elected officials from the area endorsing Shankland, including State Sen. Jeff Smith, State Rep. Jodi Emerson, and Former State Reps. Dana Wachs and Chris Danou.

kathleen-vinehout“I’m proud to support Katrina Shankland for Congress. I know firsthand what our 3rd Congressional District needs in our next Congresswoman. Katrina has that rare mix of experience, political intelligence, breadth of knowledge, and tenacity to win this vital race for our democracy and represent us well. She has the passion and integrity to serve as a truly outstanding Congresswoman,” said Vinehout.

“Former State Senator and Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Kathleen Vinehout is a strong and deeply respected leader as a champion of government accountability and protecting our democracy. I’m truly honored to have her support in this critical race for our democracy and the future of our country,” said Shankland.

Vinehout’s endorsement builds on Shankland’s momentum. She has now amassed endorsements from Congressmen Mark Pocan and Eric Sorensen, former Congressman Dave Obey, more than four dozen state and local elected officials, 16 unions, the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO, End Citizens United, Social Security Works, and United Rural Democrats. In mid-June, she became the first Democrat in WI-03 to release TV ads, with her first two focused on her record of co-sponsoring and passing 225 bipartisan laws in the State Legislature and subsequent ads focused on reproductive freedom, clean water, democracy, and Katrina’s local endorsements. Head-to-head polling shows Shankland is the only Democratic candidate who beats Van Orden in the general election this November, 48-46%.

Katrina Shankland is a state representative in the Wisconsin State Assembly. In the Legislature, Katrina has passed 225 bipartisan laws, including increased access to affordable rural healthcare, help for farmers, expanded protections for first responders, and stronger clean water laws. Katrina is running for Congress to bring some common sense to the Capitol, fight against extremism, and deliver results for the hard-working people of Wisconsin.
