MADISON - Today, Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, Senate Democratic Leader Dianne Hesselbein, and State Representative Lisa Subeck held a press conference condemning Donald Trump’s work to restrict access to contraception after his allies in the U.S. Senate blocked the Right to Contraception Act Wednesday – and as Republicans in Wisconsin continue to block similar legislation, leaving contraception access in jeopardy for thousands of Wisconsinites.

Speaking one day before the anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court decision which established the right to contraception nearly 60 years ago, they praised President Biden for protecting access to reproductive care and slammed Trump for attacking access to contraception. In recent weeks, Trump has said he is “looking at” policies restricting access to contraception – all while his allies are planning to undermine access to birth control, including emergency contraception and condoms, if Trump is reelected.

“Contraception shouldn’t be up for debate, because a majority of Wisconsinites demand and believe this is a right. But because of Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, we’re once again seeing these reproductive rights under attack,” said Secretary Godlewski. “Our access to contraception is hanging by a thread…we know how we got here. These egregious attacks on our reproductive rights have been started by Donald Trump and his extreme allies. Trump [...] overturned precedent with Roe v. Wade, he then appointed anti-abortion people into his cabinet, and during his term he undermined our ability to access contraception by rolling back protections in the Affordable Care Act.”

“Because of Donald Trump, access to safe, effective contraception is once again up for debate,” said Leader Hesselbein. “Tomorrow marks the anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court case that recognized the fundamental right to contraception. I honestly can’t believe we’re here today, fighting for the same things they had to fight about nearly 60 years ago. It’s disgusting.”

“Contraception is essential for family planning, for women and men who want to decide their futures, who want to decide when and if they are going to have children…It is a fundamental right that we all thought we had agreed on, long ago,” said Representative Subeck. “But clearly this isn’t the case. Just last month, Donald Trump said he was ‘looking into’ restricting our right to contraception, and yesterday, a vote in the U.S. Senate to enshrine the right to contraception into federal law failed. MAGA Republicans in our nation’s capitol were in lock step with Donald Trump in working to curtail access to contraception.”

President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates who are standing with the eight in ten voters who support protecting access to contraception – leading a whole-of-government effort to protect and expand access to reproductive health care amid ongoing Republican attacks – including by signing an executive order to strengthen access to birth control and working to expand access to free birth control, for women with and without insurance, college students, servicemembers, and their families.
