MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin Assembly passed AB-321, a reading literacy bill with a top down approach that bans one form of instruction, three-cueing, in favor of a phonics based curriculum. Representative Clancy (D-19) issued the following statement:
This bill is a very real problem because it is a top down solution with many unknowns. We need to trust teachers and acknowledge that different students learn in different ways. As a former public school teacher myself, I know we need to have access to every tool in our toolbox to meet each student’s needs. Schools need sustained and real investment in public education, not just a single half funded literacy program.” |
