More than 2 million Americans file new jobless claims PDF Print E-mail

great-depressionSince March, more than 40 million Americans have filed initial claims for unemployment benefits.


WASHINGTON, DC - Roughly 2.1 million more Americans filed new claims for jobless benefits as President Trump and governors push some states to loosen coronavirus-related restrictions, according to data released by the Labor Department on Thursday.

In the week ending May 23, a seasonally adjusted 2,123,000 Americans filed initial claims from unemployment benefits, falling from a revised total of 2,446,000 applications filed the week before.

MADISON - Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes will host on Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 9 a.m. the third member meeting of the Governor's Task Force on Climate Change via video teleconference. During the meeting, he will also hold a brief press availability. 

Through Executive Order 52, Gov. Tony Evers created the Task Force on Climate Change and named Lt. Gov. Barnes as the chairman.The task force is comprised of individuals from across the state representing various industries, including agriculture, small business, utilities, and Indigenous communities. They are charged with providing policy recommendations to Gov. Evers to address the effects of climate change and create a clean energy economy in Wisconsin.

Lt. Gov. Barnes will be available to speak with the press about the task force at 10:45 a.m on a separate Zoom call.
