tony-eversAs COVID-19 surges in Wisconsin, Gov. Evers to deliver statewide address Tuesday.

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers in a statewide address tonight will call for unity and working together in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The governor will deliver remarks from the Governor’s Conference Room in the East Wing of the Wisconsin State Capitol tonight, Tues., Nov. 10, 2020, at 6:05 p.m. CT.

The governor’s address will be available to stream live on the governor's YouTube and Facebook accounts, respectively. Media outlets are welcome and encouraged to stream the address live or record the address for use. Below are excerpts from the governor’s remarks as prepared for delivery:

…A global pandemic—coupled with economic uncertainty and another election season—has shaken our patience, our empathy, and our compassion for one another.

Our optimism has been battered, our resilience strained, and our character tested.

But now, as we put the election behind us, we are called upon to remember the things that unite us—and that includes the struggles that we share.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates 5,000 Wisconsinites could be lost to COVID-19 in Wisconsin by January 1st if no further actions are taken to get this virus under control. That means another 2,500 people who might not be with us on New Year’s Day.

I am concerned about what our current trajectory means for Wisconsin healthcare workers, families, and our economy if we don’t get this virus under control.

So, I want to be clear tonight: each day this virus goes unchecked is a setback for our economic recovery.

Our bars, restaurants, small businesses, families, and farmers will continue to suffer if we don’t take action right now—our economy cannot bounce back until we contain this virus.

The surges we see—the new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths—these are not foregone conclusions. These are predictable and preventable. That means the fight against this virus is winnable, but only if we fight it together.

bar2-open-milwTemporary injunction is another blow to our state's response to this pandemic, but we can’t wait for the courts, we need Wisconsinites to stay home and mask up.

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers released the statement below Friday regarding the Third District Court of Appeals' decision to order a temporary injunction on Emergency Order #3, limiting public gatherings to 25 percent of a building or room's capacity, which was set to expire today.

tony-evers“Today’s decision comes as we reported more than 6,000 new COVID-19 cases—the most ever in a single day. This is another blow to our state's response to this pandemic and our efforts to keep Wisconsinites safe. We will continue challenging this decision, but the bottom line is that we can’t wait for the courts to figure this out—we need Wisconsinites to stay home and mask up, and it has to start today. It’s the only way we will get this virus under control and ensure our economy can recover.”

coronavirus-small-businessJust like small businesses, cultural organizations have taken a major financial hit during the pandemic.

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today announced that $15 million in COVID-19 Cultural Organization Grants has been awarded to 385 cultural organizations across Wisconsin. The program will provide critical funds to assist cultural nonprofit organizations impacted by the pandemic.

tony-evers“These cultural organizations represent the vibrant fabric of communities across our state and support Wisconsin's tourism industry and local economies,” said Gov. Evers. “This grant program will help organizations cover essential costs related to keeping their employees and communities safe throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

Administered by the Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA), the COVID-19 Cultural Organizations Grant program provides grants to nonprofit organizations whose primary missions are to produce, present, or exhibit cultural disciplines such as music, dance, theater, literature, and the visual arts, or items of environmental or scientific interest. Grant awards can be used to cover pandemic-related impacts such as lost revenue, increased workers' compensation costs, cleaning and sanitization, and purchases of services or equipment to facilitate telework by employees.

“Just like small businesses, cultural organizations have taken a major financial hit,” said DOA Secretary Joel Brennan. “We’re all in this together. We hope that these funds will make it possible for us to be able to enjoy the museums, theaters, and music from these organizations once it is safe to do so again.”

More information regarding the COVID-19 Cultural Organization Grant Program is available here.  A full list of grant winners is available here.

wi-fair-mapsGroup instrumental to preserve Gov. Evers’ veto power, vows to ensure we get fair maps in this state to finally break the gerrymander.

MADISON – Wisconsin Conservation Voters and its 30,000-plus members and supporters have preserved Gov. Evers’ veto power, a crucial step in breaking the state’s extreme gerrymandering, and helped elect Joe Biden for president.

Executive Director Kerry Schumann had this to say about the election:

“After one of our most robust election campaigns, the results are in and we achieved our primary goal – to preserve Gov. Evers’ veto power and set the stage for redistricting to break the gerrymander in the state. While other states are still counting every vote, it’s clear Wisconsin has elected Joe Biden for president. As we talked with hundreds of thousands of voters, it was clear that conservation voters were instrumental in winning these elections. Now, we’re going to be there every step of the way to ensure we get fair maps in this state to finally break the gerrymander. We’re going to hold politicians accountable for their failures on climate change and public health, and we’re looking forward to deepening our partnerships with the frontline organizations that delivered these victories with us.”

Wisconsin Conservation Voters and its affiliated independent expenditure committee ran aggressive campaigns in key legislative races that included:

  • Making more than 68,000 calls to voters
  • Sending more than 500,000 texts to voters
  • Mailing nearly 5,000 handwritten postcards to voters
  • Running digital ads that reached more than 4.5 million people
  • Sending 16 direct mail pieces to more than 110,000 households
  • Producing and running four radio ads
  • Completing more than then 490 volunteer shifts
