MADISON – Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) is co-hosting the 1st Annual Wisconsin Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) & Tribal College Fair on Saturday, October 7th. Pre-dating the civil war in some instances, there are more than 105 HBCU’s and 37 Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) in the United States. These colleges provided access to higher education for African-American and Native American students during periods of slavery, reconstruction, and “Jim Crow” segregationist policies. Today, they serve as a one of the many options for students interested in a diverse and inclusive post-secondary education. I encourage all students and their parents to come out and take advantage of all the information and tools that will assist them in better understanding their higher education options” Taylor said. There are many resources to utilize, including panel discussions on the HBCU experience and sessions on Financial Aid 101, NCAA Clearinghouse rules, Essay Boot Camp. The College Access Center will be available, as well as Pre-College Program and scholarship information.
