jared-hoy-depsec-doc-2021MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today announced his appointment of Jared Hoy to serve as the secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC). Hoy previously served as the deputy secretary of DOC, and his appointment fills the vacancy created by former Secretary Kevin Carr’s retirement.

tony-evers“Jared has served for decades in public service and corrections, including working as deputy secretary, directly in the field as a supervisor, and several other critical roles at the department,” said Gov. Evers. “Jared is well respected by colleagues in corrections, and I am looking forward to him serving and bringing his experience, skills, and dedication to this new role.”

“It is both an honor and a privilege to be asked by Gov. Evers to lead one of the largest state cabinet agencies, the Department of Corrections,” said Hoy. “There is no more noble calling than maintaining community safety by caring for justice-involved individuals. It is why I have devoted my entire career to public service as a corrections practitioner. The synchronous pursuit of protecting our communities by providing rehabilitation and second chances is what calls so many of us to this work, myself included. I’m equally proud of the work our dedicated staff do every day in the continuance of this mission and humbled to be given the opportunity to further our agency’s standing as an established leader in the field of corrections.”

With two decades of experience working in corrections, Jared Hoy began his career in corrections as an outpatient therapist, corrections counselor, and research analyst in Minnesota. In 2007, Hoy joined the Wisconsin DOC as a corrections field supervisor and has held many positions at the agency in the years since, including program and policy chief, policy initiatives advisor, training director, and assistant administrator and administrator of the Division of Management Services. Most recently, Hoy has served as deputy secretary since January 2021, where he has regularly collaborated with stakeholders, including advocacy groups, law enforcement, and the Statewide Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, and has supervised various offices and divisions within the Department.

Hoy received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the College of St. Scholastica and a master’s degree in community counseling from the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Superior. He has delivered lectures on correctional best practice in several graduate programs, including at UW-Madison, Superior, and Platteville.
