afghanistanWAUPACA, WI – Sunday marks the annual National Purple Heart Day, commemorating the oldest American decoration for military merit given to those who have died or been wounded in combat.

brian-smith“Today we honor the incredible service, sacrifice, and commitment of our veterans, who have spent their lives upholding the freedoms that we all hold dear,” said Waupaca Mayor and State Senate Candidate Brian Smith in a statement. “The Purple Heart is an honor that should not be taken lightly, awarded in the name of the President of the United States to those who have been wounded or killed in service to their country."

“Now more than ever, it has become apparent that our veterans need a voice from their elected representatives,” Smith continued. “As State Senator, I will work to expand access to higher education, invest in job creation, improve health care services and strengthen workplace protections for our men and women in uniform. Today is a day to acknowledge the extraordinary sacrifice of those who have been wounded or killed in combat, and to be reminded of the importance of taking care of our veterans when they are home.”
