ALLOUEZ - Two Green Bay Correctional Institution workers were stabbed and beaten by an inmate Wednesday, and a third was injured while trying to break up the fight.

All three were treated at a Green Bay hospital and released, Brown County sheriff's officials said.

The incident is the second time in the past year that multiple prison staffers have needed hospital treatment after an attack by an inmate.

dave-hansenLocal state Senator Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay) blames staffing cuts at GBCI and facilities like it.

“These types of assaults are becoming way too common and they’ve got to stop," said Hansen in a statement today. "We can’t afford to go on like it’s business as usual while our correctional facilities become more and more dangerous."

“I believe Secretary Litscher is trying, but listening sessions won’t cut it anymore. We need to make the COs and staff partners in running these institutions when it comes to issues of safety in the workplace," continues Hansen. "They’re putting their lives on the line every single day, many of them working 16 hours a day with little if any time off to help keep our communities safe. They see it all and they are in the best position to know how to make our prisons safer."

Hansen believes it is critical that employees at the prisons be listened to.

“It is past time that they be given a seat at the table and a voice in how our correctional institutions are run,” Hansen concludes.
