Ron Johnson Comes Under Fire for Being MIA at Senate Committee Hearings PDF Print E-mail

ron_johnsonMADISON - The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting Senator Ron Johnson missed 60% of the hearings held by the homeland security committee and the subcommittees to which he was assigned during his first four years in office.

"Chairman Johnson is the worst kind of hypocrite," said Kory Kozloski, executive director of the state Democratic Party. "He says national security is his most important issue. But until 2015, he barely showed up to work on critical committee hearings regarding our homeland security."

Johnson's early committee attendance record includes missing hearings on homegrown terror, terrorist travel, and three separate hearings on border security. The Senator even found raising campaign dollars more important than keeping Americans safe, managing to attend fundraisers on the same days he skipped homeland security hearings.

Johnson continues to beat the drum on national security now that it is a hot-button issue during an election year, but his own campaign confirms the senator only attended 83 hearings out of a total 207 from 2011 to 2014.

"If he really cared that much about keeping us safe," Kozloski said, "he'd have done his job when the voters weren't looking, not just when his job was at risk."

ron-johnsonMADISON - In an attempt to cover up for Ron Johnson’s documented failures for Tomah veterans, the senator’s allies continue to lie and bully those who try to stand up to their phony, politicized, and misleading attacks.

Shot: From last week’s reporting by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel...

Ellinghuysen told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that she made an error in marking the memo as being hand-delivered to the Democratic lawmakers. She said she made an assumption but that the deliveries did not occur.

Ellinghuysen said the print ad was "not truthful."

Chaser: From Dan Bice’s latest story detailing Johnson’s attempts to cover up his own failings…

"I feel used," [Ellinghuysen] said. "I feel used by Sen. Johnson."

Citizen Action Endorses Judge Joe Donald for State Supreme Court PDF Print E-mail

Written by Citizen Action of Wisconsin, Robert Kraig
Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:17

Joe DonaldMILWAUKEE - Citizen Action of Wisconsin, a statewide membership organization with over 38,000 members, announced today its endorsement of Judge Joe Donald for Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Judge Joe Donald is an extremely experienced jurist. With nearly 20 years presiding over civil and criminal court cases he is by far the most qualified candidate. Throughout the legal community, Judge Donald is highly respected for his command of the law, his fairness, and his common sense approach. Judge Donald will deliver justice for everyone in Wisconsin.

At a time when special interest dominance is eroding public confidence in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, it is critically important that we elect judges who make independent judgments based on the merits of each case. The specter of Supreme Court judges failing to recuse themselves from cases involving parties who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on their behalf has sullied the reputation of Wisconsin’s highest court. That is why Citizen Action of Wisconsin believes we need a Supreme Court Justice like Joe Donald, whose long record of judicial independence is beyond reproach.

Judge Joe Donald is a leader in improving and modernizing our criminal justice system. Wisconsin has the highest incarceration rate for African Americans in America. Judge Donald has been a leader in the creation and development judicial solutions like drug treatment courts, which reduce the mass incarceration of nonviolent offenders and work to address the root causes of drug addiction and poverty. We need this kind of common sense innovation to reduce crime and improve lives at our highest court.

kraigThe election of Judge Joe Donald would also be a historic milestone. Judge Donald would be the first African American elected to the Wisconsin State Supreme Court (Former Justice Louis Butler was appointed).

“On behalf of our 38,000 members in every corner of the state, we are proud to recommend Judge Joe Donald for Wisconsin Supreme Court,” said Robert Kraig, Executive Director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin. “Judge Donald will work to secure justice for everyone in Wisconsin, not just well connected special interests and big campaign contributors. Based on his proven record of judicial integrity, innovation, and impartiality, Judge Donald has earned a place on Wisconsin’s highest court.”

Right-Wing Front Group Highlights Sen. Ron Johnson's Hypocrisy PDF Print E-mail

ron-johnsonMADISON - It's become a regular practice for Senator Ron Johnson's partisan allies to use the whistleblower complaints about the Tomah VA as a political weapon while glossing over Johnson's own failure on the issue.

Ron Johnson spent months pointing fingers at his political rivals, placing blame on others for the complaints that surfaced at the Tomah VA. Reporting from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel quickly made Johnson change his tune after revealing the Senator's office allowed the whistleblower's information to die in "the equivalent of a congressional black hole."

Previously, Johnson's office claimed the complaints were referred to an oversight committee, an intentionally misleading statement since the complaints were merely passed off to other members of Johnson's staff.

Since the Journal Sentinel report, Johnson has refused to accept any responsibility or hold his staff accountable for failing Wisconsin veterans. That hasn't stopped Johnson's dark money henchmen from lodging shameless, hypocritical attacks on the issue.

Right-wing front group Wisconsin Alliance for Reform is running baseless attack ads against Johnson's opponent Russ Feingold. The ads claim Feingold failed to take action after receiving a memo in 2009 outlining the problems occurring at the Tomah Va, but the union president says she has no proof any such memo was delivered.

"It's no surprise that a front group started for the sole purpose of attacking Democrats with untold amounts of anonymous money would run baseless attack ads to support an incumbent Republican candidate as vulnerable as Ron Johnson," Democratic Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Kory Kozloski said on Wednesday. "The more Johnson's dark money attack dogs bark on this issue, the more they highlight the Senator's shameful inaction and bold hypocrisy."

Sixth Anniversary of the Lawless Citizens United Decision PDF Print E-mail

russ-fiengoldMIDDLETON, WI - Today is the sixth anniversary of the lawless Citizens United decision. Six years of super PACs, of million dollar checks being poured into elections from corporations and billionaires. Six years of the real corrupting power of the decision: the long-term, year-to-year influence big money has over the policies that affect middle-class and working families.

How this influence plays out is even more harmful than it seems, because candidates for office now assume they need the support of super PACs to run viable campaigns.

Potential candidates for president -- or senators up for reelection -- are expected to court the support of the billionaires who fund super PACs. To win that support, they take positions -- or votes -- that align with the kinds of economic policies that benefit CEOs and hedge fund managers, not middle-class and working families.

To mark today's anniversary, I've written a piece for Medium outlining the real effects the lawless Citizens United decision has had on our democracy. Will you take a moment to read my piece and share it with your family and friends?

Share my op-ed: Six Years Later: Citizens United's Winners Aren't Declared on Election Day.

In the years to come, a future Supreme Court must overturn the Citizens United decision, and I strongly believe it will happen if we elect Democratic presidents. But as election season continues, we can't forget that the hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars flooding our elections isn't only deciding who wins or loses -- it's deciding whether or not our economy is rigged.

Thank you for helping me get the word out.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold

MIDDLETON - Russ for Wisconsin announced today that the campaign has raised nearly $2.7 million in the fourth quarter and over $7.4 million since Russ jumped into the Wisconsin senate race less than 8 months ago.

Both figures represent federal off-year records for Wisconsin and demonstrate Russ’ strong start as the election year gets underway.

Broad grassroots support continues to serve as the backbone of Russ’s campaign. Over 25,000 Wisconsinites have contributed to Russ’ bid for the U.S. Senate. Russ’ contributors hail from all 72 of Wisconsin’s counties. 94% of all Q4 contributions are under $100.

"I’m honored to stand with the tens of thousands of Wisconsinites who have contributed their time and their resources into building this campaign," Feingold said. "I’m proud of our campaign’s strong grassroots support. The people of Wisconsin are making it clear that they want leaders who will fight for middle class and working families – not just a select few. I'm extremely grateful to have their backing and their confidence."

Since announcing his candidacy, Russ has traveled to all 72 counties, listening to Wisconsinites in every corner of the state.

How to Contact Wisconsin State Officials PDF Print E-mail

You might want to contact some or all of your representatives in Madison. Here is a short list. Most try to maintain that their "most important job is listening", so feel free to let them do their jobs.

MADISON - The state Public Records Board has cracked open the door to hearing from the public about its secretive decision last summer to limit access to public records. So please let the board hear from you — let it know that it needs to rescind its action to limit access to text messages, emails, Facebook posts and other electronic communications by public employees.

The State of Wisconsin also uses your tax dollars to maintain a web page at legis.wisconsin.gov that gives you plenty of information about the State Assembly and Senate, your representatives, committee assignments, and a whole lot more. Any of them may be pushing a bill or serving on a committee that could affect you, so you don't have to live in their particular districts to contact one of them.

The state site also has a helpful map of Wisconsin if you need to find out who your representatives are.

While you're at it, you might want to contact some or all of your representatives in Madison. Here is a short list. Most try to maintain that their "most important job is listening", so feel free to let them do their jobs.
