wisc-supremecourt-justicesGOP Extraordinary legislative session laws will remain in place with Thursday’s ruling.

MADISON – The Wisconsin Supreme Court reversed a lower court decision against the Wisconsin Legislature on Thursday, restoring the laws enacted during the Legislature’s undemocratic lame-duck session. We are disappointed in and respectfully disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the case and fails to address the ways in which the Legislature violated the Wisconsin Constitution in convening the December 2018 Extraordinary Session.

The Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, Erin Grunze, issued the following statement:

capitol-night“We are disappointed the court ruled in favor of the Legislature’s extraordinary session that undermined the Wisconsin Constitution’s limit on its power. Wisconsin voters put their trust in their Legislature to operate with transparency and to respect constitutional limits. As an organization dedicated to serving these voters, the League will continue the work of protecting the public’s trust in the rule of law.”

The president of the League of Women Voters of the United States, Chris Carson added the following:

“Today’s decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court undermines the will of Wisconsin voters. The Wisconsin State Legislature’s actions defied the democratic process, which is a major blow to our democracy as a whole. The League remains dedicated to defending the will of voters, despite today’s decision.”
