school-guns-wiRep. Lisa Subeck addresses our national epidemic of gun violence and a Wisconsin Democratic response.

MADISON - On Wednesday, thousands of brave, determined students from across Wisconsin and the country staged a national walk out to demand action on gun safety reform after the horrific mass shooting at a Florida high school last month. Thursday, Rep. Lisa Subeck (D - Madison) addressed our national epidemic of gun violence and a Wisconsin Democratic response.

lisa-subeckHello, this is State Representative Lisa Subeck with this week’s Democratic Radio Address.

In light of last month’s tragedy in Parkland, Florida, it is undeniable that our nation is facing an epidemic of gun violence.

After each act of senseless violence, thoughts and prayers are all that is offered – but thoughts and prayers are not enough to keep our communities and our children safe.

But things can be different this time around.

The survivors of the Parkland shooting are demanding policy and change, and students from around the country are echoing their calls for sensible gun safety laws.

Yesterday, students from across Dane County left school and marched to the Capitol to make their voices heard and to demand action.

Rest assured, Wisconsin Democrats are listening.

I am proud that my colleague, Representative Terese Berceau, has introduced legislation to ensure a background check is performed for every firearm purchase so that we have confidence that guns purchased in Wisconsin are not bought by dangerous individuals who are not allowed to possess them.

We know that 81 percent of Wisconsinites support universal background checks, because Wisconsinites recognize that everyone is safer with strong background check laws.

Wisconsin Democrats want to uphold and affirm the Wisconsin tradition of safe and responsible gun ownership.

Universal background checks for gun purchases are a common sense first step in making our communities a safer place to live, work, and raise a family.

Thank you.
