MADISON, WI – Despite overwhelming opposition from working families, medical experts and healthcare advocates, Congressional Republicans are making another attempt to dismantle health care coverage for millions of Americans. The Graham-Cassidy bill would raise premiums, limit coverage and enact an age tax on older Americans.

jennifer-shilling“Congressional Republicans seem to be competing for a healthcare bill that can do the most damage to working families,” said Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse). “Their proposals have gone from bad to worse with the latest Graham-Cassidy proposal. This bill further favors special interests, cuts taxes for the wealthy and raises out-of-pocket costs on working families and seniors.”

“Despite bipartisan opposition from Governors across the country, it is a slap in the face to families already struggling with difficult illnesses and costly treatments that Gov. Walker has expressed support for this dangerous plan. Wisconsin families suffering from serious illnesses, individuals with preexisting conditions and older adults living on a fixed income will lose coverage through no fault of their own.”

Based off of data from the Congressional Budget Office and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Center for American Progress predicts that 32 million Americans could lose their health care coverage by 2027. Additionally, at least 414,000 Wisconsin residents are at risk for losing coverage under the Republican plan. Thousands more will face increased costs and reduced coverage of vital health services.
