janet-bewley"October is National Farm to School Month, a chance to celebrate the growing recognition of the benefits of establishing connections between children and locally produced food. I’d urge all of you to get out and support a Farm to School program in your area. Take this chance to talk up one of our state’s greatest strengths and better yet to enjoy the great local food options we have all across Wisconsin." - Sen. Janet Bewley

A written transcript of the address is below:

"One of the best ways we can support Wisconsin farm families is part of a trend that is gaining speed nationally and here at home. More and more of us are making the conscious decision to choose local food.   The quality and health benefits are clear and it’s even more important as a way we can support our local economy.

"October is National Farm to School Month, a chance to celebrate the growing recognition of the benefits of establishing connections between children and locally produced food.  Farm to School Month was established by Congress in 2010. By 2015 Farm to School Week activities reached an audience of nearly 3 million and 2016 looks to be even better.  This year’s theme, One Small Step, highlights the simple things we can do to promote and partake in local food options and for school kids to bring these habits home.

"Schools across the state are participating, using this opportunity to highlight the benefits of using locally grown food.  Some of the activities include taste tests in school cafeterias, nutrition education events in the classroom, farm visits and school garden harvest parties.

"I’d urge all of you to get out and support a Farm to School program in your area.  Take this chance to talk up one of our state’s greatest strengths and better yet to enjoy the great local food options we have all across Wisconsin."
