janis-ringhand"Hunters and anglers were the earliest supporters of conservation and scientific wildlife management. They recognized that without taking action unregulated hunting and fishing was threatening the future of many species. They successfully lobbied the government to adopt policies that emphasized sustainable use of fish and game, create hunting and fishing licenses, and for taxes on sporting equipment to fund conservation agencies." - Sen. A written transcript of the address is below:

"Hi, this is Senator Janis Ringhand. September 21st is National Hunting and Fishing Day. A great day to recognize and thank all the hunters and anglers in our state. National Hunting and Fishing Day was passed by Congress unanimously in 1972 and since then we have taken this opportunity to salute our outdoor sportsmen and women in Wisconsin and across the nation for their conservation efforts.

"Hunters and anglers were the earliest supporters of conservation and scientific wildlife management. They recognized that without taking action unregulated hunting and fishing was threatening the future of many species. They successfully lobbied the government to adopt policies that emphasized sustainable use of fish and game, create hunting and fishing licenses, and for taxes on sporting equipment to fund conservation agencies.

"Hunting and fishing has over a billion dollar economic impact on Wisconsin’s economy. Hunters and anglers spend money on things such as gas for the boat and car, food and beverages, firearms, ammo, bait, lodging, trailers, and gear. Senate Democrats strongly believe that working together with our states hunting and fishing communities that we can manage our natural resources so future generations have the same or better outdoor recreational opportunities than we have now."
