ron-johnsonMIDDLETON, WI - While traveling to all 72 of Wisconsin’s counties, Russ has consistently heard that one of the biggest barriers facing middle class and working families is the cost of higher education. That’s why he supports allowing students to refinance their student loan debt.

That’s a far cry from Sen. Johnson. He not only voted against letting students refinance their loan debt, but doesn’t even believe there should be any federal student loans at all. In fact, Sen. Johnson is so out of touch with Wisconsin students that he calls student loans “free money” and claimed that students who have to take out loans to pay for college “don’t really necessarily understand finance.”

We thought Sen. Johnson’s comments were pretty out of touch, given that students in the UW system graduated with $28,000 in student loan debt on average in 2014. But we wanted to ask Wisconsin students directly. So we did.

Their reactions to Sen. Johnson’s “free money” hot take and his record of opposing all federal student loans are about what you would expect from Wisconsin students working hard to earn a degree and compete in a competitive global economy.
