peter_barcaMADISON – On Thursday, Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) responded to the latest Marquette University Law Poll, which showed overwhelming opposition to the changes proposed in Gov. Walker and the Republicans’ state budget.

“Today’s poll shows that Gov. Walker's popularity is directly tied to his Budget of Errors,” Rep. Barca said. “We heard around the state that the people of Wisconsin reject this extreme budget proposal that slashes K-12 education, long-term care, our world-class higher education system, and our sporting heritage and conservation efforts.”

“I am encouraged to see widespread support for our public schools and overwhelming opposition to cuts to the UW system and K-12 schools,” Rep. Barca added. “It’s high time for Republicans to join with Democrats to rewrite the budget. A budget is about priorities and Wisconsin must prioritize economic opportunity, infrastructure, opportunities for our children and strong communities.”

The poll found overwhelming opposition to both education cuts included in the state budget proposal. Seventy-eight percent of voters oppose Walker’s proposal to cut $127 million from K-12 school spending and 70 percent oppose the proposed $300 million cut to the UW system.

Earlier this week, the Walker Administration issued more than 110 pages of mistakes in the state budget. The document showed that Gov. Walker is inattentive to the state and the budget and that his administration has switched positions on several issues over the past months.

“It is clear that Gov. Walker and Republican legislators created this terrible fiscal environment through their last two budgets that were irresponsible and had destructive policy choices,” Rep. Barca concluded. “I’m calling upon Republicans to not just soften the blow of this extreme budget but also work with Democrats to rewrite key elements of this budget.”
