MADISON – Today, the State Supreme Court of Wisconsin is hearing oral arguments on the legislative maps that were drawn by Republican lawmakers. State Senator Melissa Agard (D-Madison), Senate Democratic Leader, released the following statement:

“Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments on whether the legislative district maps that our Legislature currently governs under are constitutional. While a ruling is not expected until a later date, a decision on this historic court case has the power to put voters back in control of our democracy.

“For far too long, Republicans in power gerrymandered Wisconsin’s legislative maps to retain control rather than represent the will of the majority. It is shameful that for more than a decade, politicians in Wisconsin have chosen their voters, rather than voters choosing their representatives.

“Gerrymandering by any political party is unacceptable and it must come to an end once and for all. Let’s lead by example in Wisconsin and set a gold standard for states throughout the nation.”
